If you are not one of those lucky ones that walk amongst us who have long luscious lashes that just make you wish your puny little stumps would grow even slightly then this is something that you may be interested in.

I have tried it all!  This is what discovered:

Fake Eyelashes

This was my first soirée into the land of luscious lashes.  They come in so many varieties that it can be hard to choose.  First you have to decide if you want your lashes to look natural or if you want to have that Drag Queen look.  If you can put these on properly they can look great!  The trouble being that they are actually very hard to put on at first.  If you persevere you do get better at it, but I always seemed to have a problem with getting the lashes on my lash line and then would have to pull them off again and go for a second attempt, which would stop the glue from working.

Pros:    Can look great if put on well.

Cons:   Hard to use and only last for the night.

Ease of use:    3/10
Overall look:    7/10
Price:    7/10

Score:    5/10

Individual Fake Eyelashes

After trying out the first type of lashes I was told that I should try the individual ones, because they look more natural.  These are what the name describes and are in small little clusters of lashes usually with around 4-6 lashes in each section.  They are applied by dipping the end of the lashes in the glue and then positioning them in the lash line where you want.  The good thing about this type of fake lashes is that they can be easier to apply and do look a lot more natural.  You don’t need to cover the whole eyelid and can just use a few sections on the outer each of each eye to create a great effect.

Pros:    Can look great if put on well.

Cons:    Only last one night.

Ease of use:    6/10
Overall look:    7/10
Price:    7/10

Score:    6/10

Professional Fake Eyelashes

This is when my lash craze really took off!  In the name of research for the Dolls I took myself along to the newly opened Browhaus at the beginning of the year and asked to get fake lashes put on (see that blog post here).  Again with this you can choose different options from natural to dramatic.  These options differ in both length and width of each individual lash.  I thought it was probably best to stick with natural, because I didn’t want to get mistaken for a drag queen without my full face of makeup!  This can only be done by a person who has been trained to put these lashes on and the results will last four weeks if done well.  It will take an hour for the lashes to be glued and dried.  These lashes can take a bit of getting used to, because you can feel them when you sleep and you have to remember to not rub your eyes while they are on.  I did find over time that I could actually be a lot rougher with them than I thought.

Pros: Look fantastic and it looks like you are wearing make up.  Lasts for a month with no maintenance.

Cons: Can be uncomfortable when you first get them.  Your real lashes will suffer from having these and it takes a while for them to grow back after taking the fake ones off.  Is far more expensive than the other two fake lash options.  Can look a bit weird when it is time to get them replaced.

Eyelash Growth Stimulator

There are a lot of different versions on the market for this, so it can be hard to choose.  I did some research and saw LiLash had the best reviews and was ranked the highest overall.  The next problem was where to buy it from, which I solved by purchasing it through Amazon (they were the cheapest).  This product is designed to increase the number, thickness and length of your own eyelashes.  You apply it once per day the same way as you apply eyeliner and it is claimed that after four weeks you will notice a difference and after six weeks you will notice a big difference.

Here is how it went for me – I started using it after I had taken off my fake lashes, which meant that my real lashes were even smaller than before (or they just looked smaller, because I was used to having really long ones).  I used it everyday as instructed and after two weeks I noticed some of the lashes on both eyes were a lot longer than the others.  After four weeks a lot more of my lashes had caught up with the longer ones and after six weeks I have long lashes!  It is easy to use and it doesn’t cause any irritation to my eyes and if used correctly the product will last up to six months.

Pros:  No discomfort, because they are your real lashes.  Lasts as long as you use the product.

Cons:  A little expensive.  Have the use the product everyday and if you stop using it your lashes will go back to the way they were before you started.

Ease of use:    10/10

Price:    4/10

@julia, interesting to hear. Maybe I'll give it a try sometime in the future if I can afford it. It would be sooo nice to not have to bother with mascara!

@beverly, I didn't know you were pregnant - congrats! You're going to be an adorable pregnant lady!

It really worked :) I used Revitalash and my lashes are longer and more dense now. But being Asian means that they still don't curl up nicely but I am happy with it being longer at least.

Thanks for sharing. I've actually tried extensions before and man was it a pain. I could barely wash my face properly although it did look fantastic.

As for Lilash, I definitely want to get some!

I have also heard that about the growth stimulator and that if you have light coloured eyes they can change colour. I did a lot of research on the one I wanted to try before buying and seemed to have made the right choice. I haven't had any side effects from it - when I first started using it I was going a bit overboard with the amount I would put on thinking that would make everything happen faster and it just made my eyes a bit itchy by the end of the day. I watched a video review from a girl in the US and she said that her eyelids did go a bit darker for a few or two, but then they went back to normal. I think if used correctly you shouldn't really get any of the possible effects.

It would be interesting to hear other girls stories from different brands.

Interesting article. Being a blonde with smallish eyes who is klutzy with mascara application, I'm always looking for ways to enhance my lashes!

When I lived in Hangzhou, one of my friends always had nice-looking fake lashes put on someplace. I tried the same place, but was disapointed that 90% of mine fell off after about a week, especially since I tried to be gentle. Then again, the place was less professional than Browhaus.

I read that the eyelash growth stimulator can turn the skin around the eyes darker permanently for some people, so I'm scared to try it. It sounds like you didn't have any bad effects from it?
