Happy Hair Days in Shanghai

Every Doll knows that good hair can make or break your day (or week, or life!) especially in Shanghai. Being a newbie, and leaving my beloved and trusted stylist (Dan Tee of Toni and Guy Manila) and not really knowing who to go to and what to do with my hair was a big issue for me. First, I knew I was in dire need of a haircut because my hair was just becoming too thick at the bottom and unmanageable. I was also feeling a bit drab with my color and wanted a change. I confess, I just jumped the gun and tried a local salon thinking if I point to a photo and they can thin it enough I would be happy. It wasn’t too bad for 68 RMB but I must say it wasn’t spectacular either. My hair felt lighter and more manageable but I still needed someone to give it the right color and shape to really make me “come alive” (If you know what I mean). The kind of feeling you get when the stylist has got it down pat and you can walk down the street with a new strut and glow about you. After seeing Elena with her new hairdo done by Douglas at the Mi Tierra Hump Day, I was ready to take some savings to splurge on a real hair pro.

My visit to Douglas King definitely did not disappoint me. Actually, the whole time was quite an experience. From hopping on to the back of his motorcycle at the Century Park stop (Exit 2), to a quick stop at his favorite sandwich stop (where they serve delicious Pomelo Tea I must add!) to the trip to the salon was a lot of fun. The sandwich shop delivered the food to the salon (which was an added bonus for me because I skipped lunch to get there on time).

Douglas definitely knew what my hair needed “highlights like it was kissed by the sun” as he called it. I got highlights, a shaping cut (and a little advice to stay away from local stylists who go crazy on thinning without any direction), the signature Douglas King treatment and some help with my eyebrows too! Through all this he was very professional and friendly and great to chat with. He also made sure to show me my highlights in the natural light outside the salon and gave me a ride back to the metro.

If you’re stuck in a hair rut and quite unsure where to go, I can definitely say that he is someone you can trust your hair and look with. It’s better to save for a couple of months and get great work that can grow out well rather than get an okay do and have to get it redone every month.

Douglas currently does his work in Pudong near Century Park but will be arranging locations in Puxi soon. He can also do house calls for a little more. He is now doing a 1,200 RMB promo for Dolls Member Card holders (which include consult, color/highlights, treatment and finish) until February 1st. His standard rates are as follows: Consult (free), Cut (600RMB), Color with treatment and finish (600RMB), highlights with treatment and finish (800-1,200RMB depending on process). Treatment (400RMB) with finish. Package of 4 treatments (1,200RMB), blow out (250RMB).
