There are a few luxe items in which every fashionable woman should invest: a great handbag, an elegant timepiece and a timeless trench coat. Perfect for inclement weather and sunny days alike, a well-made trench can mask imperfections, create a perfect hourglass shape and pull together even the mishmashiest of outfits.
It's fair to say that Burberry is synonymous with the trench coat. The wardrobe staple has been the Brit label's bread and butter for years, not to mention the most coveted piece around for fashion fans. And now we're going to have the opportunity to put your own stamp on it.
When Burberry announced their bespoke initiative less than two weeks ago, they promised 12 million customization options (seriously). But if one’s investing in a Burberry trench (and I am about to do it), one probably wants to keep it classic so that one can wear it forever, right? No way. Emma Watson (Hermione from Harry Potter), who’s the first to debut the new service, pretty much squashes that argument. The first version she wore featured slim, black leather sleeves, and the second has a gold studded belt and sleeves; and both still look perfectly classic and more than fairly awesome.
Burberry Bespoke line will be launched to the public early in 2011. Chief executive officer Angela Ahrendts and chief creative officer Christopher Bailey (who is also Emma's BFF) said that customers would be able to design their own coats online, mixing and matching colors and styles, and adding details such as buttons, studs and initials.
The prices may not even be set out yet but I expect for example a trench with neon trim, a studded collar, leather buckles to cost a pretty penny. Oh well... I'll just go on the website to create virtual dream trenches. And err... I'll convince myself that it's the same as owning the physical thing.
So now all we need to decide is..the question on every fashionista's mind right now...
'What Would MY Bespoke Burberry Trench Look Like?'
PS: Did you know that the Burberry check was in fact invented by a customer, not Burberry themselves? A French customer in the 1920s wanted something to distinguish her trench from others and chose a check lining as her mark.
