VPN in China: Access Facebook, YouTube, Twitter

Bread and butter, coffee and sugar, so it goes for Internet and VPN... at least this is how it is for expats here in Shanghai. Before I continue, I would like to say that I meant no disrespect writing this article. I understand the necessity of cyber censorship, especially in China. I like Shanghai (I wouldn't be here if I have a better alternative) and I'm sure not going to bitch about someone else rules if I'm a guest in their home, thus I guess I'm only writing this article for other expats who, like me, are addicted to Facebook, YouTube, Blogger and Twitter. If you are an terrorist/activist, please STOP here!

VPN... what is this??!!

First of all, what is this VPN. Well, it is actually a short term for Virtual Private Network. Hmmmm. Okay, lets start with Private Network. Your office for example is a local private network, computers can share files, share printers and do other stuff  through the office network. Okay now, what if you have an office in Shanghai and the other is in Beijing. Well, if you connect both of them, then it is a bigger network. So, Virtual Private Network is used to connect a bunch of computers, servers together in far away places so that users can enjoy the privileges of having a private network. In basic, it emulates the environment of a Private Network over public network (the Internet).

How is VPN used against The Great FIREWALL?

Well, as data are transferred, its encrypted on both side. Errr????? Let's say you want to browse YouTube from your laptop. You do not browse YouTube directly, it goes though a server. So if your VPN provider's server is in Madagascar, the guys in YouTube will think you are browsing from Madagascar and the firewall will think that you are browsing a site from Madagascar. And as you are browsing, data are encrypted and decrypted by your laptop and server. If anyone intercepts the data between your laptop and the server in Madagascar, they won't be able to tell that you are browsing YouTube. The great firewall can't block what they cannot understand basically, that's how you pass, unless of course the firewall blocks your provider's server in Madagascar.

Browse Facebook in China? Stream YouTube in China?? Enough bullshit, which VPN?

Well, I have heard of plenty, but I would surely get something that is cheap. The great firewall has blocked the websites of most of the good ones, but they can't block all their servers.  So, go to a friend that already has VPN and register yourself an account.

I'm paying around 35USD for 1 year subscription and I'm streaming movies!! I'm noting this because I have seen providers charging more than this for 1 month subscription.
This link (http://www.bestvpnservice.com/vpn-providers.php) is one of the many sites that reviews VPN providers. I'm using one of them that has 30 bad reviews, yet I'm quite happy. So I guess the rest are a lot better.

Hope this article helps, if not, just PM me and I'll reply with my provider. No guarantees though :)

Hey Penn, the statue still exists which is very surprising. It's on the parking lot behind office building on 798 Zhaojiabang Rd. Feel free to come over and photograph. Those animals look particularly remarkable wet after rain.

Dear Elena, please could you advise where the photo was taken( a few months ago) of "upstanding + "friendly" dog statues " @ a park/garden ? Am assuming it exists...and wasn't 'photo-shopped'. Was published in 'Thats ShangHai' magazine ?
many thanks,
Penn

Elena, what is the name of the VPN you are using? Seems a real bargain at 35$/year.

I am using this service for some time now:
highspeedvpn.com.

Quite happy with them actually, but I was wondering if I can get something cheaper, like 35$ PER YEAR :D.

I had Witopia my first year here but honestly I found it quite useless because it is way too slow to stream TV shows from the US (I guess they don't have enough servers to accommodate their clients). I have another VPN now, that works way better.
