It’s serendipitous when you stumble upon some place good to eat in Shanghai. It’ s extra special when it’s a place you don’t worry about ordering the wrong thing (because it doesn’t live up to your expectations or because you’re not quite sure what you are ordering) or be anxious about breaking the bank. That’s exactly what happened when I discovered Goody’s Sandwich Shop in a hidden nook in Pudong near Century Park. I wouldn’t even have discovered it if I hadn’t skipped lunch to try and make it on time to my appointment with Douglas King. He had treated me to a sandwich and his favorite Pomelo tea. The salsa beef on ciabatta bread and pomelo tea not only hit the spot that winter afternoon, it got me curious about making a visit to the shop when I came back for a treatment with Douglas the following week.
My first experience at Goody’s did not disappoint. While some may perceive it to be a simple sandwich shop, when you meet the Greek owner Kiriakos, you realize there’s a lot more to Goody’s than good sandwiches and great prices (roughly 20-30rmb for a sandwich) there’s a lot of heart. While my favorite sandwich is the Mediterranean Omelette on French bread (which is a mix of spinach and Kiri’s custom made Feta with egg) and my hubby’s favorite is the “travel all the way from Puxi” meatball sandwich Goody’s definitely has a lot to offer on their menus. A must try is their famous Pomelo tea and their fresh home made yoghurt with mangoes (only 15 rmb for a bowl!)
As Kiri fondly likes to call it, Goody’s has home cooked meals in a bun. He gladly shares that his dishes are recipes he has collected from family and friends from all over the world and that he has recreated here in Shanghai. He also is adamant about making the prices very affordable because he would prefer to build a steady client base rather than making a big profit over one meal. Also, since he is very particular about the freshness of the food, they can only deliver if you are five minutes from their store. At times, to some people’s surprise Kiri makes the delivery himself. While everyone may not be as willing to travel all the way to Expo Plaza Pudong, not to worry! Kiri told us he just opened a Puxi shop in Jiangsu road which also serves Pizza. Soon they will even have a Goody’s on wheels for events and whatnot. I’m very excited that Goody’s has big plans to expand and share the goodness and heart Kiri puts into his food and service. Without a doubt, I’ll be definitely making a trip there again soon. Good news Dolls! Your card gets you even better prices (10% off) at a Goody’s near you.
