altIn my quest to find something interesting to write about, while staying on the topic of healthy lifestyles and losing weight, I thought what better topic than the thing that some women seem to love more than sex!  SUGAR!  Yes that little ingredient that women will search high and wide for, they will leave the comfort of their apartments in the depths of winter to get that fix…

In my research to write this article I found so much information about the bad affects of sugar that it was actually hard to cull them down to write something that didn’t read like a text book or wasn’t hundreds of pages long… So I have endeavored to try and condense all the information into a user friendly version and go through and pick the health issues that I thought you could relate to!

When you do you a search for the reasons why sugar is bad for you the first website that comes up is an actual list of 146, yes I said 146 reasons why sugar is bad for your health!  Personally if 146 health problems don’t turn you off sugar I don’t know what will!  In this list there are so many things that you would read and just go “huh”, so I have taken out the ones that only doctors would understand and left you with some that you can actually contemplate what it would mean for your own body.

Are you ready?  Here we go…

Sugar can:

  • Make you sick by affecting your immune system.
  • Increase your fasting levels of glucose, which means it is harder for you to burn fat and lose weight!
  • Cause premature aging by changing the structure of your collagen, which has to be a good reason to stop you from eating next chocolate bar!
  • Weaken your eyesight and lead to tooth decay, but then who cares about your bad teeth when you can’t see them in the mirror after your eyesight has gone!
  • Cause arthritis, asthma, gallstones, heart disease, appendicitis, multiple sclerosis, yeast infections, osteoporosis, diabetes, cataracts, hemorrhoids, headaches, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, kidney stones, constipation, dizziness, depression, increased cholesterol, and the list goes on and on!
  • Increase the body’s fluid retention, which is just another way for you to feel fatter!
  • Cause varicose veins and mild memory loss, so at least when your legs start to get all purple and veiny you won’t remember that it was something you ate that caused it.
  • Reduce learning capacity and hormonal imbalances.

Other not-so great things that sugar can do for us is increase the affects of PMS and make you want to eat more, which in-turn makes you start the never-ending cycle of dieting to lose those extra pounds that have managed to jump on around your hips…

In my opinion the worst side effect of eating sugar has to be the fact that your body changes sugar into 2-5 times more fat in the bloodstream than starch!  2-5 times, wow!

But on a positive note it is not your fault for wanting to eat sugar all the time, because it is an addictive substance.  If there was any other additive or substance that even caused a quarter of the health problems above people would definitely not even consider touching them, but an unfortunate circumstance for the people of the world is that sugar tastes good!  Yes it tastes good, but that is the only good part of it!

A few years I cut out all sugar from diet for six months and was never healthier!  I felt so alive and energetic all the time and without exercising my body fat percentage went down to a very low 18%!  When I started this diet my boyfriend joined in and lost a whopping 7 kilos in two weeks!  If you cut sugar out of your diet you don’t need to watch fat or other things that you are eating, because generally it is the sugar that is causing the weight gain.

Don’t take my word for it – I put out the challenge to some of the Dolls, especially the ones who are going in the Fitness Challenge to try it and see the amazing results they can achieve!

#6 I'm not saying No to fruit..julia 2010-03-25 13:24
I am not saying stop eating fruit - I am saying cut out processed / added sugar in other foods... and for people who are trying to lose weight be selective about the types of fruits you eat, because some of them, especially bananas, will definitely not help you lose weight and will have the opposite effect.

#5 Fruit I like and can't give up...elena 2010-03-25 11:41
Green apples are the worst. I also don't like grapes. I like and can survive only eating the following: strawberries, apricots, peaches, pineapple, mango, bananas, watermelon, honeydew, cherries, persimon, lychee, longan... They taste good cause they are juicy and sweet.

Each fruit is a source of vitamins and microelements, which can't be substituted with any pills. It might help to lose weight by cutting off the fruit, but one will lose more than just weight.

#4 Fruit...julia 2010-03-25 11:10
No fruit is not in the white list, because it is natural sugar... but if you are trying to lose weight you shouldn't eat the high-sugar content fruits like grapes, banana's, etc.

Green apples have some of the lowest sugar counts in fruits.

So does it mean that all fruits are in the white list? Even watermelons? What else can be put into the whitelist?

#2 Added sugar...julia 2010-03-24 16:51
Cutting out all sugar forever is not a good thing, but what I mean by cutting out sugar is the added sugar in foods/drink... Stick to natural sugars like fruit and you will be totally healthy! White refined sugar does not give your body anything that it needs to survive...

Cutting out added sugar is a huge challenge though, you would be surprised to see how many foods have it!

#1 Pretty scary. but...elena 2010-03-24 15:45
If you eliminate sugar completely, how is brain supposed to get glucose, which is a vital and only food for brain cells???

"Our brain consumes 60 percent of the sugar flowing through our bloodstreams, a total of about 450 calories each day. And because the brain can't store energy as fat or glycogen - a storage molecule made of glucose - like other parts of the body, it needs a continuous supply of fuel."

"Sugar improves memory, concentration and learning capacity. Sugar makes us cheerful and happier, too, as it chases away melancholy and irritability feelings, which are influenced by the brain activity."

I don't support the idea of cutting out sugar and its derivatives completely. It has to be taken in moderation.
