Shopping is a favourite hobby for many of us, but for the rest it can be just, plain hard work. Here are my top shopping tips that should get you through your Spring shopping unscathed.
1. Make a list before you go shopping. Look in your wardrobe and see what you have and what you need. What colours and styles do you have? What item of clothing are you always missing when it comes to putting an outfit together? Always make sure that a new buy will go with at least 3 items that you already have in your wardrobe.
2. Make a budget. How much money are you happy to spend on each item? Are you looking to buy an investment piece or some smaller fashion items to update your wardrobe? When looking to buy an investment piece such as a wool coat, suit or leather goods always buy the best quality that your budget allows.
3. Wear makeup and shop on a day that you feel good about yourself. If you are looking in the mirror and not liking what you see, it doesn‘t matter how fabulous the new clothes are, you won‘t like them because you don‘t like you.
4. Go prepared wearing the correct undergarments and shoes. If you are trying on trousers or skirts wear no seam knickers or if looking to buy a top, wear the correct bra. Buying work wear? Don’t wear trainers. If you are not wearing the right kind of shoes at least have them with you.
5. Always, always, always try it on. When trying clothes on check that they fit you properly. Look at the back, front and sides. Look for bulges, a sure sign that the new clothes are too tight. Also check that you have not lost your shape, a sign that the clothes are too big.
6. As nice as it is to go shopping with friends, if you are serious about your purchase, shop alone. This way you can try on as much as you like, return to stores and shop the way you like to shop without the worry of a complaining friend. Save shopping with friends to when you are looking for smaller fashion pieces to update your wardrobe.
7. Buy for the body that you have now. Never buy clothes that you have to slim down to fit into. They can always be altered by a tailor when you do loose the weight.
8. Buy for your current lifestyle. You might dream of floaty silk dresses worn with a 3 inch heel but if you are the mother of 3 boys and live in trousers and flat shoes it probably isn‘t worth spending your budget on a dress that you may never get to wear.
9. Never shop last minute for a special occassion. If you have been invited to a wedding or something equally as fabulous don‘t look for your outfit two days before the event. Chances are that you won‘t find anything that you absolutely love and will buy a “second best outfit“ that you won‘t be happy with.
10. Look at the price per wear rather than the actual cost. If you are looking at a pair of classic black leather boots that seem expensive but you will be able to wear them with jeans, trousers and skirts for at least a couple of seasons then the price per wear is low and so they are a good buy.
And always remember my favourite saying: "When I get tired of shopping, I sit down and try on shoes"

yesterday, so upset for a Client and for my apartment, I was walkin'around , after a revamp in browhaus, jump in the same old & usual shop in Xingle lu and bought a black long jersey dress. Well, back home I realize that I have already that dress. Not a similar one, BUT THE SAME! to encourage my self, I said, well I love it so much that in case one get damaged I have a replacement.
THE SAME DRESS!!
Keep up with the writting!!!
Okay I know we have not met yet, but please please please could I borrow your overlocker to make this dress? I have a great one in Aus, but never bought one here! This is one of the reasons I have been slack with making stuff, because of all the extra effort involved with making stuff not fall apart at the seams without one... Also, the cheap sewing machine I bought in China is pretty pathetic compared to my awesome one in Aus!
All non-sewers in the group probably have no idea what we are talking about - lol... I will buy you a drink or two to say thank you if you say yes!
And being the Uber Organiser I am number 9 completely resonates with me as well... I am going to the White Collar boxing in June and I have already found the pattern for the dress I want and sent my mum in Australia shopping for it and it is in the post... Now I just have to go to the fabric market once it turns up and start sewing (making it myself, not getting it made at the fabric market).
Put a smile on my face when i was reading Tip7. I tend to buy expensive pieces a size bigger- just in case i put on weight & cant fit into them. (Thinking long term & Want to make money worth) :)
And Tip3, how very true. On 'bad days', even the best clothes in the wardrobe seem to look wrong.
