A "Traditional" Way to Better Health

Recently I started getting injury after injury… (actually maybe not real injuries, but aches and pains that I like to nickname “Julia Pains” and I always figure they will disappear if I ignore them for long enough!).  What can I blame for this recent spate of pains?  Too much exercise, not stretching, too much stress, not sleeping properly?  Who really knows, maybe it is a combination of the lot!  I first hurt my leg, which then lead to my back and shoulder hurting.  In the back of my mind I am thinking that maybe I am finally getting too old and need to slow down, but the energetic part of my personality refuses to accept that!

So in the search of a way to NOT slow down my lifestyle I went looking for something that will help me through and get me back into working order.  When you live in China there are different options to choose from when it comes to health.  You could go for western treatments, e.g. Chiropractor, Physio Therapist, etc, but these are not only western, but western prices and for people like me who are not on expat salaries they are not really an option for ongoing treatment.  Another option is obviously Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is what I decided I should try.  Okay, after this decision is made then you come up with a whole new set of questions...

  1. Where do I even start looking?
  2. I can’t speak good enough Chinese to go to a local hospital, and do I really want to go to one?
  3. How do I know if the person I go to is any good?
  4. Will the place I go to be clean?
  5. Etc, etc…

I know for me I have tried to find out who is good and where to go, but the answers I always got were very vague and the story I have heard is that to go to someone who knows what they are doing you will need to go to the hospital and that will take you the whole day!  I can speak Chinese, but it is not good enough for me to spend a whole day in a local hospital trying to explain what I want to get out of my treatment.  Plus I don’t really want to spend a whole day getting treated.

So, as the rules of universe states when you are looking for something or someone it quite often falls in your lap I got a text message from someone who thought they knew me, but I didn’t know them… it turns out this message was from Franck Desforges, who is nothing other than a Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapist!  Don’t you love how stuff like that happens!

Franck has been in China for over 10 years, which made him realize the huge benefits from TCM in balancing your mind and body.  This then pushed him to pursue study in this field.  He is a qualified Acupuncturist from Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has extensive clinical experience in Kunming (Red Cross Hospital) and in Shanghai (Shuguang Hospital, The Acupuncture & Moxibustion Research Centre, Yue Yang Hospital).  So any worries I had about trying him were squashed before the first meeting, because he has a long history of experience in the local market.

I have been to see him twice now and he has done different kinds of treatments on me to try and fix my shoulder.  After the first treatment my shoulder was getting better and then after the second session I think I am 80% better!  One of the reasons I like going to see him is that you get the benefits of this type of treatment without the added stress of going somewhere where there could be other people standing around you and looking at what you are getting done (anybody that has been to a local hospital will understand what I am talking about here!).  Language also isn’t an issue, because Franck speaks English, Chinese and French.

TCM can be used to treat many things from: injuries, insomnia, stress, loose weight, depression, headache, back or neck problems etc…

Another interesting treatment that can be done is Facial Rejuvenation using Acupuncture!  This treatment uses needles to help facial complexion, including skin tone, color, lines, and texture.  The name for this is Facial Lifting by Acupuncture.  I have a lot more information on this if you are interested, please send me a message.

You can find Franck’s details in the directory on the site.

@Amy - I just spoke to him and no he doesn't do the herb thing... he can only do very basic herb stuff, so he doesn't really offer it.

Julia, I'm very glad to hear that. I did acupuncture in Ukraine. Back then my doctor, who studied in Tibet, warned me to be careful in China, because Chinese old-school practicioners believe that their "energy" is enough to clean the needles and they just rinse them with water. I don't how true it's true on practice though.

The needles are one-use only, so when he gets the needles to use on you he takes them straight out of the packaging (where they already come sterilized)... I have had a few different people do acupuncture on me and this is standard practice after the needles are used they are disposed of.

Does he sterilize the needles before the session? I mean not just spraying some alcohol mixture on them but doing proper sterilization in autoclave or sterilizer.

@Sayler he does actually work at the hospital as well, but then you wouldn't get the experience I am talking about... I will ask him and see what he says.

@Julia,
Since it appears Franck is not affiliated with a hospital or business (no address details/business name in the directory), do you know if Franck can provide receipts that would be accepted by insurance companies.
