I am one of those people who is very protective of her hair. When I say that I mean the cut, colour, the hairdresser I use, etc. You could probably go so far as to call me slightly obsessive (only slightly, okay maybe no slightly!). If I could I would pay for my hairdresser in Australia to come to China every 6-8 weeks to do my hair, but the budget really doesn’t cover that!
When I arrived in China 3.5 years ago I was Blonde! Yes I know hard to believe with my current colour hair… I attempted to go to a few different places to get this kept up, but I was originally living Guangzhou and they are lacking good, western hairdressers who have a good supply of Blonde colours. So Brunette I went and I love it!
In my attempt to find a hairdresser that I could trust in Shanghai I did the usual technique of asking as many women as I know who they go to and who they think are good. At first I thought the only way I would get a good result was to pay through the roof for it… I went to one of the famous places in the French Concession and was not only left with an empty wallet, but was really disappointed with both the cut and the colour. I had got into the habit of leaving my hair for a very long time in between visits, because I really didn’t want to pay for what they did. I also would try to wait for the last part of the year so that when I went back to Australia for my yearly trip I could get it fixed there!
So after all the dramas of searching with no good results I have finally found a hairdresser that is not only good with doing cuts, but the colour is awesome! I love my hair and I totally loved the personal experience when getting it done. I am used to going to the hairdresser and them knowing my name and giving me personal attention. Now I can have that in Shanghai!
Stephen Buchanan is a true find in Shanghai! He works out of a small salon in Maoming Lu. The Salon, the atmosphere, the service, the cut, etc are all spot on! I ended up staying an hour after I was finished, because it is just a fun place to be and everyone is so friendly.
The whole process started with discussing what I wanted to get done and then on goes my colour (really black please!), after I was chilling out with my colour and chatting the day away I was taken out the back to get the colour washed out. One of the things I absolutely love about getting my hair done in China is the beds at the washbasins! In Australia I am always uncomfortable when getting my hair washed and can never enjoy the massage, because my neck is hurting so much! All I can say is when the girl washing your hair asks you if you want the five minute massage say yes! Aaahhh, it was such a relaxing experience and to think that I was actually contemplating saying no!
Then we move onto the cut. I have that western style hair that doesn’t like the humidity, so when I tell it to stay straight it goes curly… The cut that Stephen gave me looks great either straight or after I have be out in the summer humidity for a few minutes and it has gone curly. If you want special treatment and a nice salon where you can sip champagne then this is the place for you. Also to top it all off Stephen provides a discount for Dolls with membership cards! What more can a girl ask for? So if you’re blonde, red, brunette, curly, straight, long or short he can look after you. He worked a miracle while I was there on a girl who had come in with yellow really damaged hair that had just had braids pulled out and by the time she left she looked like a new person!

Thanks!
I have already been there a month and a half ago and I am going again next week AND I have already sent a couple of friends! A triky question now: better Stephen or Douglas?!?!?!?
I am as protective as Julia is with her hair. To give you an idea: I lived in Australia and I found a great hairdresser there but, before finding him, I was going back to my home-town twice a year and I was waiting to go back to get my hair cut. Well...I am from ITALY!
So, I recently moved to Shanghai and I have thin but very curly natural hair and I need someone able to deal with mediterranean/curly hair.
Is Stephen also good at this? I went to have a look (I didn't have an appointment) to HIP and ID Hair. Are they any good for curly hair?
Let me know!
Thank you
Kikka
